Mobili-T (Mobile Therapy) is a system for remote swallowing rehabilitation. It consists of a device and a smartphone app.
The device is wireless and attaches on the skin surface, right under the chin. It uses surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors to monitor the activity of the submental muscles during swallowing exercises. The sEMG signal is sent to the Mobili-T app, providing patients with real-time biofeedback.
Mobili-T is quite unique. Its development has involved patients and clinicians from the inception of the project. Its software contains an algorithm that can take sEMG signal coming from submental muscle contractions and attribute it to either a swallow, or an extraneous movement, such as head turns.
Mobili-T allows clinicians to tailor treatment prescriptions to their patients. It also asks patients to calibrate the system (and thus the therapy targets) every time the device is removed and replaced on the chin, or turned off and on.
Mobili-T lets clinicians monitor the progress of their patients from a distance, thereby reducing wait times and costs associated with travel. Adherence to treatment regimens can be tracked objectively.
The first version of our system is aimed at patients with a history of head and neck cancer. Designs and algorithms were optimized for these patients. We are currently exploring Mobili-Tís functionality in patients with a history of stroke. Feasibility testing and clinical trials are planned for patients with a history of head and neck cancer.
